McComb takes two from Lawrence Co.

MONTICELLO – McComb swept a Region 6-4A basketball double-header from Lawrence County in high school basketball action Friday night.

The Lady Tigers, coached by Charlton Grey, used a strong second half to blow open a game that had been tied at halftime. McComb won 74-47. In boys’ play, Hilton Harrell’s Tigers overpowed the Cougars 81-59.

In the girls’ game, Vicki Rutland’s Lady Cougars led for most of the first half, only to see McComb score the final four points of the half to knot the game at 29-29. McComb then dominated the second half, outscoring Lawrence County 45-18 after the intermission.

Mylisha Hammond led McComb with 21 points, and Dellesheonia Dixon added 14. Destiny Smith and Kevanique Butler each had eight points. The Lady Tigers improved to 11-6 overall, and 2-0 in region play.

Lawrence County got 22 points and eight rebounds from sophomore forward Camryn Davis. Zipporah Baylis added 10 points. The Lady Cougars had trouble protecting the basketball against the tall and athletic Lady Tigers. LCHS turned the ball over 24 times in the 32-minute game. The Lady Cougars fell to 11-7 overall, and 0-2 in Region 6-4A play.

In the boys’ game, McComb, the two-time defending Class 4A state champion, jumped to an early 16-3 lead. Lawrence County responded with a 15-2 run of its own, knotting the game at 18-18 early in the second quarter. After that, it was all Tigers.

Four McComb players netted double figures, led by Zarkeichious Martin, who scored 19 points. Antonio Cowart and Tredarius Lee had 15 each. KeJaron Porter scored 13. McComb improved to 15-0 on the season, and 2-0 in the region.

Junior center Keyshawn Feazell was a bright spot for Pat Bridges’ Cougars. He had a game-high 27 points, along with eight rebounds. Gabriel Lewis added 15 points. Lawrence County fell to 9-7 overall, and 1-1 in region play.

The Lawrence County boys will be in action Monday as they travel to Mississippi College in Clinton to play in the Martin Luther King Tournament against Jackson Academy. Tip off is at 11 a.m.
