Wesson beats Hazlehurst to end losing skids

HAZLEHURST – The Wesson Cobras and Lady Cobras defeated Hazlehurst Friday night to claim their first district wins of the season in Region 7-3A basketball action.
In the girls’ contest, the Lady Cobras snapped a five-game losing skid with a 50-33 win over the Lady Indians.
In boys’ action, the Cobras ended a two-game drought with a 72-63 victory over Hazlehurst.
Wesson will resume division action Tuesday as the Cobras and Lady Cobras invade Meadville to battle Franklin County. Junior varsity action tips off at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity games at 6 and 7:30 p.m.
Lady Cobras 50, Lady Indians 33
The Lady Cobras hammered the Lady Indians in the first half to carry a 30-11 lead into halftime.
Hazlehurst outscored Wesson 22-20 in the final two quarters, but the Lady Cobras prevailed.
Alaysha Vaughn powered the Lady Cobras with 17 points. Aurianna Vaughn chipped in 10 points. Jashia Smith contributed nine points. Carnesha Green and Alayshia Mims provided five points each. Sabria Green scored four points.
Wesson 72, Hazlehurst 63
The Indians carried a slim 35-34 lead into halftime, but Wesson’s offense came alive and outscored the Indians 38-28 in the final two quarters to secure the division win.
Anthony Jones powered the Cobras with a double-double performance of 36 points and 17 rebounds. He also had five assists, two steals and two blocked shots for the game. Eric Rhymes contributed a double-double night as well with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Randy Hooker provided seven points. Shemar Dickerson netted six points. Cornelius Barlow scored three points. Jermaine James and Will Hulon had one point each.
