The Loyd Star Hornets used an 8-2 run in overtime to grab a Region 7-2A win over Prentiss Tuesday night.

In girls’ action, Loyd Star dominated the Prentiss Lady Bulldogs in a 61-22 victory.

Loyd Star will travel to Liberty Friday night as the Hornets and Lady Hornets prepare to take on Amite County in three games. Junior varsity action begins at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity games at 6 and 7:30 p.m.

Loyd Star 59, Prentiss 53 (OT)

Trailing by just 2 at halftime, 26-24, Loyd Star kept it close but could never grab the lead.

In the fourth quarter, the Hornets outscored the Bulldogs to tie the contest at 51-all at the end of regulation.

In overtime, Loyd Star took over the game with an 8-2 run to capture the win.

“The boys played a hard-fought ball game,” said Loyd Star coach Gene “Moochie” Britt. “The guys played hard all the way to the end. I’m very proud of their effort.”

Levi Redd powered the Hornets with 22 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Javion Beard netted 15 points, nine rebounds, two blocked shots and four steals. Patrick Price scored six points and had two rebounds. Cade Hodges and Gregory Hooks had five points each. Avery Leggett ended the night with two points and five rebounds.

Kedarious Sumrall led Prentiss with 15 points. Tim McNair Jr. netted 13 points. Ronald Baker and Kevin Hall scored six points each.

Lady Hornets 61, Lady Bulldogs 22

The Lady Hornets scored 23 points in the opening period and took a commanding 41-8 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Lady Hornets pounded the Lady Bulldogs with a 20-14 run in the final two periods to clinch the win.

“The girls played really well,” said Britt. “I was pleased to give everyone some playing time.”

Mackenzie Smith powered the Lady Hornets with 17 points, eight rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Mandy Russell netted 12 points, two rebounds and had one blocked shot. Faith Berguron scored seven points, two assists and had four steals. Hannah Dickerson chipped in six points and had five rebounds. Toni Banks scored five points and had four steals. Lydia Britt scored four points. Caylee Yarborough, Marley Poole, and Jordan Shelby had two points each. Caylee Yarborough finished with two assists and four steals. Jordan Shelby had five rebounds and three steals. Sarah Britt ended the night with 1 point and three rebounds.

Jakeria Madison led the Lady Bulldogs with seven points. Jasmine Dothard netted six points. Jada Brinson scored four points. Tykeviah Hall had three points. Natavia Oatis ended the night with two points.

In junior varsity action, Loyd Star beat Prentiss 39-35.
