Funeral services for Mattie Muriel Cooper, of Brookhaven were Monday, Jan. 25, 2016, at 6:30 p.m. at Central Baptist Church.

Visitation was Monday, Jan. 25, 2016, from 5:30 p.m. until time of services.

Mrs. Cooper, 93, died on Jan. 23, 2016, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in

Jackson. She was born in Brookhaven on March 13, 1922, to Eben Hunsucker and Margaret Cushman Hunsucker.

She was a member of Central Baptist Church.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Raymond Cooper; parents, Margaret and Eben Hunsucker; three sons, Robert Lee Cooper, Eben Carl Cooper and Donald Ray Cooper; one daughter, Patsy Brewer; three sisters, Elsie Shaheen, Ruth Langford and Helen Sadler; along with one brother, Carl Hunsucker.

Survivors are her children, Billy Cooper of Springfield, Massachusetts, Margaret Finnemore of Brookhaven, Carolyn Provins and husband, Jim, of Chandler, Arizona, Lynda Anderson and husband, Victor, of North Port, Florida and Joyce Kupiec of Brookhaven; 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and other cousins.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Blair E. Batson Children’s Research Hospital, 2500 N. State Street, Jackson, MS 39216.

Arlean Tarrio Shelby

Funeral services for Arlean Tarrio Shelby of Brookhaven are Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016, at St. Paul M. B. Church in Brookhaven with burial in the Garden Memorial Park Cemetery in Jackson. The Rev. Michael Shelby will officiate. R.E. Tyler Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation is Friday, Jan. 29, 2016, from 1 until 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Shelby, age 77, died Jan. 25, 2016, at the Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson.

She was born Oct. 25, 1938, in Jackson to Marion Tarrio Sr. and Ida Tillis Tarrio.

She confessed a hope in Christ at a very young age, while attending New Strangers Home Baptist Church in Jackson. Upon moving to Brookhaven, Arlean attended Ebenezer AME Church. In 1994, she united with the St. Paul M. B. Church,  where she served in many capacities including choir president, youth choir matron, a member of the Mother Board and the Pastor’s Aide Club.

She united in Holy Matrimony to the late Charles Shelby Jr. on Aug. 16, 1965. To this union seven children were born.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; siblings, Mary Louise Tarrio, Nellie Tarrio, Mary Frances Tarrio Fields, Naomi Rhodes, Ruth Tarrio, Ida Lee Tarrio, Herman Tarrio and Marion Tarrio Jr.

Survivors are her seven children, James Shelby Sr. (Valerie) of Atlanta, Georgia, Eunice Davis (Melvin) of Madison, Linda Shelby of Jackson, Dennis Shelby (Florence) of Simpsonville, South Carolina, Michael Shelby (Joyce) of Brookhaven, Valerie Sterling (Donald) of Brookhaven, Ramone Shelby of Hattiesburg; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two adopted children, Doris Shelby of South Carolina and Earl Shelby of Chicago, Illinois, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family who she loved dearly and who loved her.
