Jackets edge Hornets in overtime

BASSFIELD – The Loyd Star Lady Hornets (15-1, 7-0) thumped the Bassfield Lady Yellowjackets 58-44 Friday night to remain undefeated in Region 7-2A action.

In boys’ action, Bassfield edged Loyd Star 60-59 in overtime.

Loyd Star will resume action Monday as the Hornets and Lady Hornets host Salem for an non-divisional contest. The varsity girls will tip off at 6, followed by the boys at 7:30 p.m.

Lady Hornets 58, Lady Jackets 44 

The Lady Hornets and the Lady Jackets kicked off the first quarter with a defensive battle as Loyd Star secured a slim 14-12 lead. In the second, the Lady Hornets overpowered Bassfield with a 15-9 run to extend its lead to 29-21 at halftime.

The Lady Hornets outscored the Lady Jackets 29-23 in the final two quarters to collect the win.

“This was a tough, physical battle for both teams,” said Loyd Star coach Gene “Moochie” Britt. “Our girls played really well offensively and we controlled the boards, which helped us get second and third chance opportunities to score. Overall, I was pleased with their effort and glad to get the win.”

Makenzie Smith powered the Lady Hornets with a double-double performance of 25 points and 16 rebounds. Hannah Dickerson chipped in 12 points and had eight rebounds. Toni Banks netted nine points, three steals and three assists. Lydia Britt scored eight points. Jordan Shelby provided assistance on the boards with 10 rebounds and finished with four points.

Derria White was the top scorer for Bassfield with 17 points. Azaria Magee contributed 15 points.

Bassfield 60, Loyd Star 59 OT 

Loyd Star secured a 23-22 lead at halftime, but Bassfield tied the game at the end of regulation at 59-all.

In overtime, Bassfield outscored Loyd Star 9-8 to squeeze out the win.

“Both teams fought hard in this defensive game,” said Britt. “We had several chances to win the game, but we just did not get the breaks at the end to help us win. Overall, I was very pleased with the guys’ efforts.”

Levi Redd paced the Hornets with 22 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists. Javion Beard had a double-double night with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Cade Hodges netted 10 points and had four assists. Greg Hooks scored six points. Avery Leggett had two points, five rebounds and two assists. Patrick Price added two points.

Mason Sims directed the Jackets’ offense with 22 points. Rasheem Boothe chipped in 14 points.

Katie West led the Lady Hornets with seven points. Lauren Smith scored five points. Kaylea Smith had four points and Christie Patterson added two points.
