Wingfield takes two from Brookhaven

JACKSON – Wingfield defeated Brookhaven in a pair of division games Tuesday night in Region 3-5A action.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Falcons beat the Lady Panthers 55-46.

In boys’ action, the Panthers fell to the Falcons 64-58.

Brookhaven will take the rest of the week off to prepare for the division tournament next week in Natchez. The Panthers will battle Wingfield in the opening round Tuesday beginning at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Panthers will take on the Natchez Lady Bulldogs at 7 p.m.

The tournament’s consolation games and championship games will be played on Friday, starting at 4 p.m. The top three teams will advance to play in the South State tournament the following week.

Lady Falcons 55, Lady Panthers 46

The Lady Panthers and the Lady Falcons battled in a defensive first half, with both teams scoring 19 points.

In the third period, Wingfield hammered the Lady Panthers (2-22, 1-5) with a 26-7 run to secure a 45-26 advantage.

In the final period, Brookhaven outscored Wingfield 20-10, but fell short of the comeback.

Taylor Carter and Tamia Stallings directed the Lady Panthers with 10 points each. Stallings was also the leader on the boards with nine rebounds. Arnancy Arnold contributed six points. Miyah Miller and Jada Henderson provided five points apiece. Cheyenne Motley, Cymphoni Thompson and Johnique James scored two points each. Mya Washington and Asia Byrd finished with one point each.

Wingfield 64, Brookhaven 58

The Panthers (20-3, 3-3) entered Tuesday’s contest looking to redeem themselves after the Falcons handed Brookhaven its first loss two weeks ago.

Brookhaven came out strong in the first and commanded a 15-11 lead, but Wingfield rallied back with a 16-11 run to take a slim 27-26 lead into halftime.

In the third, Wingfield outscored the Panthers 21-12 to secure a 48-38 lead. In the fourth, Brookhaven bounced back and outscored Wingfield 20-16, but could not make up the difference.

Darius Bryant was the top scorer for the Panthers with 20 points and nine rebounds. Lazorian McNulty contributed 16 points, three assists and two rebounds. Shon Blackwell provided eight points and grabbed nine rebounds. Darrian Wilson netted seven points and had five rebounds. Garrick Smith finished with two points and two rebounds.
