Wilkinson Co. sweeps Wesson

WOODVILLE – Wilkinson County defeated Wesson in two Region 7-3A games Friday night to close out the regular season.

In the boys’ contest, the Wilkinson County Wildcats survived a second-half surge by Wesson to prevail 63-61.

In girls’ action, the Lady Cobras fell to the Lady Wildcats 48-25.

Wesson continues action Tuesday as the Cobras and Lady Cobras host the Region 7-3A tournament. The Lady Cobras will kick off the tournament games at 4 p.m. against the Franklin County Lady Bulldogs. The boys will play at 8:30 p.m. against Port Gibson.

Wesson secured a 8-6 lead in the first, but Wilkinson County caught fire and outscored Wesson 14-7 to capture a 20-15 lead at halftime.

The Lady Wildcats hammered the Lady Cobras with a 28-10 run in the final two quarters to collect the win.

“We started the first quarter playing really well, but through the rest of the contest we just could not match Wilkinson County’s intensity,” said Wesson coach Rusty Newman.

Aurianna Vaughn was the top scorer for the Lady Cobras with 11 points. Alaysha Vaughn contributed six points. Jashia Smith provided five points. Carnesha Green scored two points and Alaysha Mims had one point.

Sharicka Franklin powered the Lady Wildcats’ attack with 16 points. Ge’Dricka Cotton chipped in 13 points and Miesha Norman netted 10 points.

Wilkinson Co. 63, Wesson 61 

The Wildcats quickly overpowered the Cobras in the first quarter to earn a 17-6 lead. In the second, Wesson rallied back with a 20-15 run to cut into Wilkinson County’s lead at halftime.

The Cobras outscored the Wildcats 35-31 in the final two quarters, but fell short at the end.

“We started off the first quarter playing sluggish, but my guys did a great job fighting back to capture a brief lead in the fourth quarter,” said Newman. “We just made too many crucial mistakes at the end that lost us the game. Hopefully, we can turn it around next week as we prepare to host the division tournament.”

Anthony Jones directed the Cobras with 28 points and 12 rebounds. Randy Hooker contributed 12 points. Eric Rhymes provided nine points. Shemar Dickerson and J.D. Allen netted six points each.

Travion Jones paced the Wildcats’ scoring with 20 points. JaQuarious Stewart chipped in 17 points, and Desmond Hunters had 11 points.
