Lady Wolves get big win over Meridian

MERIDIAN – The starting lineup for the Co-Lin Lady Wolves played solid basketball throughout the contest as Co-Lin (19-3, 10-3) defeated the Lady Eagles of Meridian 92-75 Monday night in women’s JUCO action. Each of the starters had double figure performances including sophomore point guard Alexis Collins with a game-high 33 points.

The Lady Wolves are back in action Thursday as they travel to Mississippi Gulf Coast. Tipoff is set for 5:30. Listen to the action live at www.colinathletics.com or on WMJU 104.3 FM in Brookhaven.

The win puts the Lady Wolves into a tie for second place with Jones County in the South Division going into the final game of the regular season Thursday. If both teams are tied after Thursday night’s games, it will come down to a tie-breaker to determine the seeding for next week’s MACJC State Tournament.

At the end of the first quarter Meridian held a 19-18 lead over the Lady Wolves. The Co-Lin offense got on track in the second quarter as they scored 29 points in Collins netted three 3-pointers. Going into halftime the Lady Wolves led 47-40 and would not trail for the remainder of the game.

In the third quarter, the Lady Wolves increased their lead 70-55. The momentum carried into the fourth quarter as Co-Lin led by as many as 19 points.

“We shot the ball really well from two-point and three-point range,” said Co-Lin head coach Gwyn Young. “She [Collins] shot the ball great. Her performance was big especially against their zone defense.”

Collins finished the game with 33 points and five assists. The sophomore was 4-6 from three-point range. Kelley Allen added 15 points and 13 rebounds to earn another double-double. She also had five assists, four blocks, and three steals. Jamilah Sanders netted 12 points, dished seven assists, and brought down seven boards. Princess Cohen poured in another 11 points while Andreal Fleming added another 10.

Co-Lin shot a blistering 49 percent (31-of-63) from the field, 57 percent (8-of-14) from three-point range, and 71 percent (22-of-31) from the foul line. Meridian shot 45 percent (28-of-62) from the field, 14 percent (2-of-14) from three-point range, and 71 percent (17-of-24) from the free throw line.
