McCOMB – Lawrence County and South Pike met in both boys’ and girls’ semi-final action Thursday, in the Division 6-4A basketball tournament at McComb High School.

In girls’ play, South Pike pulled away in the second half, taking a 58-43 win over the Lady Cougars. In boys’ action, Pat Bridges’ Cougars roared to the tournament finals with a 53-34 win over the Eagles.

Lawrence County gave it a good fight in the first half of the girls’ game. South Pike led 24-21 at the intermission. In the second half, the Lady Eagles were powered by Moriah Hurst and Nakaylis Washington as they pulled away. Washington scored 11 of her 14 points in the second half. Both players ended up with 14 points. My’Neka Frazier and LaDereka McNeil each had 9.

Camryn Davis led Lawrence County with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Saadi Garner added seven points, six rebounds and three assists.

Lawrence County fell to 14-15 on the season, and will face the loser of Thursday night’s McComb-Florence game at 4 p.m. Friday. South Pike, coached by Cavadas Nunnery and Janice Felder, improved to 26-3 on the campaign, and will face the McComb-Florence winner in Friday’s final.

Lawrence County steadily pulled away in the boys’ game, beating South Pike for the third time this season. The Cougars used a balanced scoring attack. Gabriel Lewis led the way with 15 points, and Keyshawn Feazell netted double figures with 10. Lane Rutland added nine points, and Phillip Moore had eight.

The Cougars improved to 20-8 on the season, and will face the McComb-Florence boys’ winner in Friday’s tournament championship game.

South Pike was led by DeMarcus Ellzey, who had 10 points. The Eagles, coached by Gary Brumfield, will face the McComb-Florence loser in Friday’s consolation game.
