Wesson falls in semifinal action

WESSON – Wesson suffered two tough losses in the semi-final round of the Region 7-3A tournament Thursday night at the Snake Pitt.

In the boys’ contest, the Cobras fell to the Jefferson County Tigers 71-54.

In girls’ action, the Lady Cobras lost to the Port Gibson Lady Blue Wave 50-44.

In other tournament action, the Lady Tigers thumped the Wilkinson County Lady Wildcats 72-32 in girls’ action. In the boys’ game, Hazlehurst edged Wilkinson County 70-68.

Tournament action continues today as Wesson plays in the consolation games at 4 and 5:30 p.m. against Wilkinson County. In the girls’ championship contest, Jefferson County battles Port Gibson at 7 p.m., followed by the boys’ championship game as Hazlehurst takes on Jefferson County at 8:30 p.m.

Jefferson County 71, Wesson 54

Christian Day was the top scorer for the Tigers with 25 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Akeem Williams and Josh Day both scored 14 points each for the Tigers. Williams had two steals and two assists, and three rebounds; and Day had seven rebounds, two steals, and one blocked shot.

Anthony Jones directed the Cobras with 18 points, four rebounds, two steals and had one blocked shot. Eric Rhymes contributed 15 points, seven rebounds, one steal and one assist. Kendrick Brown finished with eight points.

Lady Blue Wave 50, Lady Cobras 44

Port Gibson was led in scoring by TyKerria Henderson as she pumped in 21 points and Nakendra Davis provided 18 points. Henderson had three rebounds and three steals and Davis had six rebounds and one steal.

Jashia Smith paced the Lady Cobras with 13 points and had four rebounds. Alaysha Vaughn netted eight points, four rebounds and had one steal, Carnesha Green and Aurianna Vaughn both scored seven points each. Jerrineisha Braxton had six points. Green had five rebounds and had one steal. Aurianna Vaughn collected two rebounds and had three steals.

Hazlehurst, Jefferson Co. capture wins

Jefferson County 72, Wilkinson County 32 

Diamond Smith pumped in a game-high 22 points to power the Lady Tigers. Jarqualya Doss contributed 15 points. Kailyn Hammett and Antrelle Gales netted 12 points each.

The Lady Wildcats were paced by Shancka Franklin who scored 11 points. Ga’Drieka Cotton chipped in nine points. 8:30

Hazlehurst 70, Wilkinson County 68 

The Hazlehurst Indians ended the night with an action-packed game against the Wilkinson County Wildcats to advance to the championship contest Friday night. Dennis Shannon blocked the last shot of the game with seven seconds left to prevent the Wildcats from forcing overtime.

JaQuavion Tillman led the night for the Indians with 19 points and had three rebounds, one steal and two assists. Dennis Shannon and Shauntavious Vardaman followed with 15 points each. Shannon had 13 rebounds, one steal and one blocked shot and Vardaman finished with 11 rebound

Travion Jones was the top scorer with 28 points and Robert Swint had 18 points.
