The NWS’s weather bulletin predicted strong tornadoes, damaging winds and large hail Tuesday. The area was under a wind advisory from noon Tuesday until early this morning.

Last week, Wesson Attendance Center suffered tornado damage on the high school side of the facility. Copiah County School District Superintendent Rickey Clopton hoped this week’s rain would not cause further damage to the school.

“We’re hoping the weather doesn’t create more issues with water, rain or wind,” Clopton said. “We released the kids and didn’t hang in there a long time because of that.”

Clopton said school would continue to be in session, unless there is an unforeseen power outage from another storm.

The school experienced significant water and roof damage at the old gym, high school gym and high school library.

“We’ve met with insurance,” Clopton said. “The (initial claims adjusters) that come by and get an overall picture of what they see have come and told us other things to look for. Somebody will be coming this week to take a deeper look at what we’ve got and give us a final determination of where we are going and what we need to do. It is ongoing. We are working on patches right now, not construction.”

Local school districts dismissed early Tuesday due to the weather concerns. The Lincoln County School District, the Brookhaven School District and the Lawrence County School District dismissed at 11:30 a.m. and the Copiah County School District dismissed at 12:15 p.m.

Copiah-Lincoln Community College also canceled classes at noon Tuesday. Offices on campus also closed early.
