The Wesson Cobras earned two wins to begin the season, defeating the East Marion Eagles 15-4 Friday night and beating the Bogue Chitto Bobcats 17-4 Saturday at Bogue Chitto.

The Cobras (2-0) will return to action Thursday as they travel to Loyd Star to play in the Lincoln County invitational. Wesson will battle Loyd Star in the opener starting at 5 p.m.

Wesson 15, East Marion 4 

The Cobras kicked off the season with a bang, plating eight runs in the first two innings before East Marion answered with a four-run surge in the top of the third.

Wesson finished the Eagles with a three-run push in the bottom of the third and a four-run blast in the fourth to win the contest in five innings.

Alex Mooney collected the win with four strikeouts and three walks in three innings of work. Preston Middleton pitched the final two innings and had two strikeouts and no walks.

Tyas Owens suffered the loss for the Eagles with five strikeouts and 14 walks.

Jimmie McQuage sparked the Cobras with a triple and a double. Will McInnis provided two singles. Max Daughdrill, Bolon Tadlock, Jeremy Smith, Payton Selman and Preston Middleton hit a double each.

Juan Belton was the top hitter for the Eagles with a double. Keron Penry had a single.

“I was proud of our team effort tonight,” said Wesson coach Seth Lofton. “We put the ball in play and had several guys get clutch hits with runners on. We pitched well and played good defense on a cold night.”

 Wesson 17, Bogue Chitto 4 

The Cobras overcame a slow start in the first inning to blast the Bobcats with a 16-2 explosion to collect the win in a four-inning contest, Saturday.

“After giving up a few free bases in the first inning, I thought we played pretty good baseball defensively,” said Lofton. “Anytime your team picks up double digit hits it’s a good day for the offense. I’m proud of the way we hit the ball today.”

Jeremy Smith pitched the win for the Cobras with three strikeouts and three walks in three innings of work. Peyton Burns pitched an inning in relief and had two strikeouts and no walks.

Mooney powered the Cobras’ attack with a homerun and two singles. Jeremy Smith, Tadlock and Middleton ripped a double and a single each. McQuage and Selman had a double apiece. Slay Acy and McInnis hit safely.

Rudy Brumfield directed the Bobcats with a double and a single. Taylor McKenzie had a double, and Tucker Lambert hit a single.
