At the capitol on Wednesday, a group of Republican legislators announced their support for Donald Trump. One of those supporters is Rep. Becky Currie of Brookhaven.

“The American people need someone who will project strength for this nation and who will put the USA back on the right path for peace and prosperity,” Currie said.

The Mississippi presidential primary is Tuesday.

Trump came out of Super Tuesday as the leader in the delegate count. Trump has 316 delegates of the 1,237 necessary to secure the nomination. Ted Cruz has 226; Marco Rubio has 106.

“He has pledged to rebuild our military and treat our soldiers and veterans with the respect they so generously deserve,” Currie said. “He pledges to eliminate Obamacare and enforce the laws of illegal immigration. Based on all of these issues and many more facing our nation, I support Donald Trump for the Republican nomination for president of the United States.”

Currie said her support mirrors that of many of her constituents.

“I have talked to many people that are for him,” she said.

Currie was joined by Rep. Alex Monsour of Vicksburg, Sen. Joey Fillingane of Sumrall, Margaret Rogers of New Albany, Gary Chism of Columbus, Charles Busby of Pascagoula, Jeff Hale of Nesbit, Randy Patterson of Biloxi and Gary Staples of Laurel.

A yallpolitics.com poll shows Trump with a commanding lead over his rivals in Mississippi. Trump polled at 41 percent, compared to 17 percent for Cruz and 16 percent for Rubio, according to the poll.  John Kasich polled at 8 percent.
