The Loyd Star Lady Hornets defeated the Lawrence County Lady Cougars 10-4 Friday night at Jan Smith-Delaughter Field.

The Lady Hornets (2-2) will resume action Monday as they host Clinton. Junior varsity action begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6:30.

The Lady Cougars (2-2), coached by Meleah Howard, will take a few days off to enjoy their spring break before returning to action Friday as they host Brookhaven. Junior varsity action starts at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6:30.

Lady Hornets 10, Lady Cougars 4

The Lady Hornets and the Lady Cougars both came out hot offensively in the first inning with each scoring three runs each.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Lady Hornets scored one run to take a 4-3 lead, but the Lady Cougars answered by scoring one run in the top of the third to tie the game at 4-4.

After holding Lawrence County scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings, the Lady Hornets exploded with a six-run surge in the bottom of the fifth to take control of the contest at 10-4 and held on for the win.

“McKenzie Smith pitched a good game for us tonight,” said Loyd Star coach Jan Delaughter. “We managed to get the hits we needed in the fourth inning to collect the win.”

Smith pitched the win for the Lady Hornets with eight strikeouts and no walks.

Jordan Harp suffered the setback in the circle for the Lady Cougars with two strikeouts and two walks. Elizabeth Smith (1K, 0BB) also pitched in relief.

Abigail Thornton directed the Lady Hornets with a double and a single. Julie Smith provided two singles. Ali Gartman had a double. Hitting safely were Shelby Smith, Kelsey McCullough and Meagan Norton.

Sydney Pevey paced the Lady Cougars with a double and a single. Abbie Errington and Josey Nations contributed two singles apiece. Tyraneshia Davis and Maddux Kirkland ripped a double each. Callie Fortenberry and Elizabeth Smith hit safely.

“We played really well in the first four innings, before one error led to another and things just fell apart for us,” said Howard. “We are a young and inexperienced team, but we need to grow up fast.”

In junior varsity action,  Lawrence County prevailed 5-3 over Loyd Star.

Kirkland (1K, 1BB), Nations (1K, 4BB) and Pevey (2K, 0BB) pitched for the Lady Cougars.

Aly Floyd (1K, 1BB) and Marley Poole (2K, 2BB) pitched for the Lady Hornets.

Amanda Rushing led the Lady Cougars at the plate with a triple and a single. Ashley Holden had a single.

Meagan Poole was the top hitter for the Lady Hornets with two singles. Lydia Britt and Katie West hit safely.
