The old adage “tradition never graduates” is so applicable to Lady ‘Cats sports. Tradition takes years to establish, but it is virtually impossible to destroy. Success breeds success. The multiple facets of athletic success: commitment, discipline, and teamwork generally translate into success in other areas of life. As much as coaches want their players to be champions on the court, the desire is significantly greater for them to be champions in the game called life.

As a former coach and administrator at Bogue Chitto, the number of fans, an estimated 700-800, who weathered the torrential rains to be courtside for the state title game was inspiring. There was a sea of navy and vegas behind the Lady ‘Cats bench cheering vociferously. Not everybody worships together, works for the same company, or resides in the same neighborhood; so, the local school and its athletic teams become the centralized component of uniting the community.

Virtually every member of the current Lady Bobcats squad had family members from preceding generations who played for Bogue Chitto. The Lady Bobcats trail only Belmont in the number of MHSAA state tournament appearances. Deep on the bench and scattered throughout the Coliseum were young girls whose dreams intensified as they watched their heroes dismantle Shaw to capture the highly-coveted gold ball. During spring break next week, they will be on dirt courts around southern Lincoln County, honing their skills, dreaming of the day when they will be on the team bus with Coach Terrell bound for the “Big House.” The cycle continues!

At Bogue Chitto, Enterprise, Loyd Star, and West Lincoln, you will find not only high performing schools, but large trophy cases, signifying rich athletic heritages. The accomplishments of any of our local teams bring positive recognition to Lincoln County. High school sports represent the greatest bargain for the entertainment dollar. I implore you to continue your rabid support of the athletes in our county schools. I’ll see you at the stadium.
