Lady Wolves sweep Mississippi Delta

WESSON – The Co-Lin Lady Wolves had another day of explosive offense as the team scored 19 runs as they swept a doubleheader from the Mississippi Delta Lady Trojans 10-2 and 9-1 Monday.

The Lady Trojans jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first after several base hits.

The Lady Wolves answered quickly and plated six runs in the bottom half of the inning. Jessica Crum brought the first three runs home with a huge home run to center field. The shot scored Brittany Barbay and Lauren Brashier who both reached base on errors. Kamryn Vanlandingham drew a walk with the bases loaded later in the inning to score Kaitlyn Taylor. Mackenzie Byrd followed with a single to center field that brought Diana Hobgood across the plate. Vanlandingham scored the last run of the inning after Barbay hit a sacrifice fly.

Co-Lin plated two runs in the third inning. Barbay led off the inning with a walk. Lauren Brashier reached on an error as Barbay scored on the play. Taylor doubled to left field to plate Brashier to increase the Lady Wolves lead to 8-2.

The Lady Wolves added two more in the fourth inning. Vanlandingham reached second on a two-base error. Mackenzie Byrd reached on an error. Both runners advanced on stolen bases. Madison Hyde’s RBI single to left drove in Vanlandingham. Brashier’s sacrifice fly to center plated Byrd and the Co-Lin lead increased to 10-2.

“We weren’t as patient at the plate as I would have liked,” said Lady Wolves coach Allen Kent. “We left too many runners stranded, and had some errors that we must cut out.”

Byrd (1 RBI) led the Lady Wolves with a pair of singles. Crum homered for three RBIs. Taylor doubled (1 RBI). Adding support with a single apiece were Carley, Scott, Hobgood, Hyde (1 RBI), and Vanlandingham (1 RBI).

Brittany McTeer led the way for the Lady Trojans with a pair of singles. Gabby Smith doubled (1 RBI). Hitting safely were Jada Mcintosh, Allyson Barber, and Mercedes Johnson.

Taylor picked up the win for the Lady Wolves giving up two earned runs, scattering four hits, and striking out four in three innings of work. Trevlynn Scott tossed two innings and allowing just two hits and striking out one.

Catrina Hall suffered the loss for the Lady Trojans giving up six runs (3 earned) on five hits, and walking five in 1.1 innings. Jamie O’Neil tossed the final 2.2 innings allowing four runs (1 earned) on four hits, striking out one, and walking one.

Co-Lin 9, MS Delta 1 (5 innings) 

Another strong first inning in game two allowed the Lady Wolves to jump out to an early 6-0 lead. Taylor got the offensive going with a three-run homer to the right field. The homer scored Barbay and Crum who both drew walks. Kayla Britt drove in Jamie Martin later in the inning with a double to leftfield. Barbay brought home Vanlandingham and Carley with single to center field that extended the Lady Wolves lead to 6-0.

The lead grew to 8-0 in the bottom of the third inning. Taylor belted a double that scored Barbay and Brashier.

The Lady Wolves added a run in the bottom of the fourth. Vanlandingham led off the inning with a walk and stole second. With one out, Scott singled to left plating Vanlandingham and increasing the Co-Lin lead to 9-0.

Mississippi Delta got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning to make the score 9-1.

Kamry Creel got the win for the Lady Wolves tossing three innings scattering three hits and striking out two. Scott threw the final two innings and allowing one unearned run on one hit, striking out one and walking one.

“Kamry Creel looked sharp from the circle today,” said Kent. “Trevlynn Scott also looked great for us in a relief role.”

O’Neil absorbed the loss giving up six earned runs on five hits and walking three in one inning of work. Mercedes Johnson tossed 2.1 innings giving up three earned runs on two hits, striking out one and walking six. Catrina Hall finished the game striking out one in .2 innings.

At the plate for the Lady Wolves, Taylor had a home run and a double for five RBIs. Britt doubled (1 RBI). Barbay (1 RBI), Scott (1 RBI), Avants, and Vanlandingham all had a single apiece.

McTeer had a pair of singles to lead the Lady Trojans. Barber and Talaja Echols added support with a single apiece.
