Cougars capture win in tournament action

BA in Gulf Shores Baseball Classic

GULF SHORES – The Brookhaven Academy Cougars participated in the 24-team Gulf Shores High School Baseball Classic consisting of team from Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee during spring break.

The Cougars dropped opening day games to Madison Ridgeland Academy and Heritage Academy on Monday, but bounced back to claim a 14-4 win over Paul W. Bryant High School out of Tuscaloosa on Tuesday before coming up short 12-9 in a day three slugfest to TC Preparatory School on Wednesday.

Fisher Warren led the Cougars’ hitting versus Heritage Academy with a single, a double and a two-run homerun. Carter Culbertson added a double and a homerun. JT Cline and Connor Smith each contributed two hits to the BA total. Price King rounded out the Cougar offense with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth. Connor Smith had five strikeouts in a five-inning relief pitching effort.

Madison Smith had a double versus a stout MRA squad while striking out four Patriot batters in seven innings of work on the mound. Ross Felder and William King added a single each for the Cougars.

Taylor Freeny had a triple and a single in the 14-4 win over Paul W. Bryant High School. Fisher Warren, Price King and Madison Smith each had a double and a single to their credit. Jaden Clark added two singles. JT Cline, Carter Culbertson and Connor Smith all hit safely in the contest. Warren pitched the complete game for the Cougars striking out 10 Stampede batters along the way.

Carter Culbertson and JT Cline led the Cougars with a double and a single each in their final game of the tournament against the TC Prep Eagles. Taylor Freeny and William King contributed two singles each. Rounding out the Cougar offense were Madison Smith, Price King, Fisher Warren and Jaden Clark with a single each.

BA will be back in action for their first district matchup of the season as the Rebels from ACCS visit Harold Williams Ballpark on Monday evening. JV first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. followed by varsity action at 7 p.m.
