Co-Lin splits doubleheader with Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE – The Co-Lin Wolfpack split a doubleheader with the Baton Rouge Community College Bears taking game one 10-6 and falling in the nightcap 8-3 Tuesday night.

Austin Irby led off the first inning with a single to left field. Champ Davison was hit by a pitch and Jeremy Moore drew a walk to load the bases. Reed Taylor reached on an error scoring Irby. With two outs, Matthew Mordecai doubled to center field scoring Davison and Moore to give Co-Lin a 3-0 lead.

The Bears would answer with two runs in the bottom of the first. Kevin Vanasselberg and Alden Hodges had back-to-back singles. With one out Layton Laird walked to load the bases. Joseph Domingue reached on error that plated Vanasselberg and Hodges to cut the Wolfpack lead to 3-2.

In the top of the second, Justin Oliver led off the inning with his first home run of the season to increase the Co-Lin lead to 4-2.

Baton Rouge tied the game at four-all in the bottom of the fifth. Vanasselberg led off the inning with a double to center field. Hodges singled to right field to score Vanasselberg. Hodges stole second and advanced to third on a Co-Lin error. John Mauldin singled to plate Hodges.

The Wolfpack took the lead for good in the top of the eighth. Oliver drew a lead off walk and stole second. Irby reached on a Baton Rouge error and Oliver advanced to third. Irby stole second base. Davison’s RBI single to right field plated Oliver to give the Wolfpack a 5-4 lead. Taylor was intentionally walked to put runners on first and third. With two outs, Jordan Antley singled to right field scoring Irby giving Co-Lin a 6-4 lead.

The Bears picked up a run in the bottom of the eighth. Tyler LaPorte reached on an error and Blake Butler was hit by a pitch. Bailey sacrificed to advance the runners to second and third. McKay Mouton hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score LaPorte closing the Co-Lin lead to 6-5.

But Co-Lin would answer with four runs in the top of the ninth. Mordecai led off with a single and Jackson Twitty was hit by a pitch. Oliver reached on a fielder’s choice that plated Mordecai giving the Wolfpack a 7-5 lead. Irby was intentionally walked to load the bases. With two outs, Taylor walked scoring Twitty, Tyler McLeod walked to score Oliver, and Antley drew a walk to increase the Wolfpack lead to 10-5.

In the bottom of the ninth, Baton Rouge added a run on a solo home run by Mauldin.

At the plate for the Wolfpack, Mordecai went 5-for-6 from the plate with two doubles and three singles and two RBIs. Irby was 3-for-4 from the plate with three singles. Davison had a pair of singles and one RBI. Oliver had a home run and a single and one RBI. Antley had a single and two RBIs. Hitting safely was Twitty.

For Baton Rouge, Mauldin led the way with a home run, double and single for two RBIs. Vanasselberg had a double and a single. Hodges had a pair of singles for two RBIs. Bailey doubled. Adding support with a single was Tyler LaPorte.

Tanner Jones earned the win in relief of starter J.D. Evans. Jones allowed one earned run on one hit, struck out two and walked three in 3.2 innings. Evans gave up four runs (one earned) on eight hits, struck out one and walked two in 5.1 innings of work.

Troy Whitty absorbed the loss allowing four runs on three hits, striking out three and walking five in 1.2 innings. Starter Jon Jones pitched five innings giving up four runs (one earned) on 10 hits, striking out two and walking two. Also seeing action for the Bears were Justin Donaldson (2 innings, 1 earned run, 1 hit, 4 strikeouts, 2 walks) and Blake Chelette (.1 inning, 0 runs, 0 hits).

Baton Rouge 8, Co-Lin 3 

Baton Rouge took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run home run by John Mauldin.

The Wolfpack tied the game at two-all in the top of the second. With one out, T.J. Wright reached on an error by the third baseman. Tyler McLeod doubled to right to score courtesy runner Chris Prentiss. Kody Smith’s RBI double to center field tied the game at two-all.

In the top of the fourth, the Wolfpack took a 3-2 lead. With two outs, McLeod drew a walk. Jordan Antley followed with a single to center field. Smith’s RBI single to right plated McLeod.

The Bears would score five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 7-3 lead. They would add another insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to ice the game at 8-3.

McLeod (1 RBI) and Smith (2 RBIs) led the Wolfpack at the plate with a double and a single, Adding support with a single apiece were Matthew Mordecai and Antley.

For Baton Rouge, Justin Acevedo tripled and doubled for one RBI. Devin Bailey had a pair of singles for and RBI. Mauldin had a home run for two RBIs. Tyler LaPorte singled for two RBIs, Kevin Vanasselberg and Layton Laird singled for an RBI. Hitting safely were Blake Butler and Kevin Gueniot.

Landyn Ragan pitched a complete game for Baton Rouge to get the win. He allowed one earned run, scattered six hits, struck out six, and walked three.

Austin Odom took the loss for the Wolfpack allowing six runs (5 earned) on six hits, struck out one and walked one in 3.1 innings. Steven Ginn relieved Odom pitching .2 innings. He gave up one earned run and two hits. Ryan Cullop also saw action pitching two innings. He allowed one earned run on two hits and walked one.
