Wesson blasts Port Gibson

The Wesson Cobras secured a division sweep over the Port Gibson Blue Waves Tuesday and Wednesday night in Region 7-3A baseball action.

The Cobras beat the Blue Waves 13-1 on Tuesday and crushed Port Gibson 18-2 on Wednesday in Wesson.

The Cobras (8-2, 2-0), coached by Seth Lofton, will resume division action on Tuesday as they travel to Hazlehurst to take on the Indians. Junior varsity action is set to begin at 3:30 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 5 p.m.

Wesson 13, Port Gibson 1

Alex Mooney was untouchable on Tuesday for Wesson as he threw a no-hitter against Port Gibson in a four-inning contest. Mooney had nine strikeouts in the game and did not give up a walk.

In the first inning of action, the Cobras’ bats came to life and they hammered out 10 runs on an RBI single by Jeremy Smith, an RBI double by Bolon Tadlock, a groundout by Preston Middleton, an RBI double by Will McInnis, a walk by Will Hulon, a homerun by Max Daughdrill, and an RBI double by Tadlock.

The Cobras would add three more runs in the bottom of the second.

Daughdrill powered the Cobras’ offensive explosion with a homerun and a grand slam homerun. Tadlock smashed two doubles. Derek Freeman ripped a double and a single. Will McInnis provided a double. Hitting safely were Peyton Burns, Colton Newman, Payton Selman and Jeremy Smith.

Tre Thompson suffered the loss for Port Gibson with one strikeout and five walks.

Wesson 18, Port Gibson 2

With the game tied 1-1 after the first inning, the Cobras managed to get their bats going in the second as they exploded with a six-run surge to take a commanding 7-1 lead.

In the fourth, Wesson pushed across 11 runs. Preston Middleton, Will Hulon and Jeremy Smith provided a two-run single each to lead the charge. Mooney, Selman and Tadlock Tadlock had an RBI single each.

Middleton got the job done on the mound for Wesson, allowing just two runs over four innings. Middleton struck out four, walked three and gave up two hits.

At the plate, Smith and Tadlock directed the Cobras with a double and two singles each. Middleton contributed three singles. Hulon, Selman and Mooney hit safely.

Jeremy Washington and Myron Stewart directed the Blue Waves’ offense with a single each.

Phi’delric Barner pitched the loss for Port Gibson with three strikeouts and four walks.
