Lady Cobras blasted Tylertown

WESSON – The Wesson Lady Cobras knocked off the Tylertown Lady Chiefs Tuesday night to claim another district win with a final score of 16-2.

The Lady Cobras will host the Franklin County Lady Bulldogs Thursday night for a big division test. The junior varsity game time starts at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity contest at 6 p.m.

The Lady Chiefs captured Wesson’s attention right off the bat when they scored two runs on a throwing error in the first. The Lady Cobras would answer in the bottom of the first inning, scoring two runs to tie the game at 2-2. They relied on their strong defense to keep the Lady Chiefs scoreless throughout the rest of the five-inning contest.

“Even though we played sloppy in the first inning, we woke up and played some ball,” said Wesson coach Michelle Nunnery. “It was a good win that put us 2-0 in the district.”

Laynee Crapps was the winning pitcher for the Lady Cobras with four strikeouts and one walk from the mound.

Brooke Jones powered the Lady Cobras at the plate with a double, a single and three RBIs. Arie Douglas and Shelbi Maxwell contributed two singles each. Harmoni Ashley (RBI-1) and Katie Westbrook each had a single.

The Lady Cobras took advantage of Tylertown’s defense by stealing bases when they could. Brooke Jones, Nikki Guess, and Katie Westbrook each had a stolen base to help Wesson put points on the scoreboard.

Defensively, Harmoni Ashley led the way with eight outs at first base and Arie Douglas had two outs and one assist at second base.

The Lady Chiefs struggled against the tough Cobra defense but did get two runs on a throwing error. Tytianna Magee and Sankerra Allen were the only hitters for Tylertown with one single each.

Port Gibson’s starting pitcher, Sankerra Allen, had six walks and was replaced by April Dixon in the second inning. Dixon finished with one strikeout and four walks on the rubber. Alexandria Williams was the top defensive player for the Lady Chiefs with four outs at first base.

In junior varsity action, the Lady Cobras won 7-0 over Tylertown.

Katie McSweyn was the winning pitcher for the Lady Cobras with two strikeouts and one walk. She was also the leader defensively with three outs on the mound. Anna Claire Crow finished with eight outs at first base with assists from fielders Riley Smith, Nikki Guess and Bre Westbrook. Natalie Bonds had one out in centerfield.

On offense, Laynee Crapps led the charge for Wesson with a double. Hitting safely were Shelbi Maxwell, Arie Douglas, Nikki Guess, Anna Claire Crow and Shaylin Green.

Tytianna Magee was the losing pitcher for the Lady Chiefs with one strikeout and three walks in the first two innings April Dixon took over in the third inning to finished with one strikeout and one walk.
