Loyd Star spits varsity doubleheader

The Loyd Star Hornets secured a split in a varsity baseball doubleheader Saturday. The Hornets fell to the Wesson Cobras 8-6, but bounced back to beat the Bogue Chitto Bobcats 14-4.

The Hornets (14-6) will resume division action Tuesday when they travel to West Lincoln to take on the Bears. Junior varsity action starts at 4:30 p.m., followed by the varsity contest at 6:30 p.m.

The Cobras, coached by Seth Lofton, will also be in division action Tuesday when they host the Franklin County Bulldogs. Junior varsity action starts at 4:30 p.m., followed by the varsity contest at 6:30 p.m.

The Bobcats, coached by Tony Davis, will return to action Saturday when the Bobcats invade Liberty to battle the Amite County Trojans. Junior varsity action starts at 11 a.m., followed by the varsity contest at 1 p.m.

Wesson 8, Loyd Star 6

The Cobras and the Hornets battled in a close contest in the first two innings with Wesson securing a 3-1 lead.

The Cobras outscored the Hornets 5-0 in the final five innings of action to grab an 8-1 advantage.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Hornets put together a five-run rally to cut into Wesson’s lead, but fell short of their comeback attempt.

Jeremy Smith was the winning pitcher for the Cobras with four strikeouts and one walk.

Konner Allen absorbed the setback on the mound for the Hornets with three strikeouts and two walks. Lane Rogers (2K, 2BB) pitched the final three innings in relief.

Parker Flowers and Lamar Lang powered the Hornets with a homerun each. James Beard contributed two singles. Hitting safely were Konner Allen, Levi Redd, Bradyn Brister and Lane Rogers.

Max Daughdrill paced the Cobras at the plate with three singles. Alex Mooney provided a double and a single. Bolon Tadlock and Derek Freeman contributed two singles each. Cade Rast had a single.

Loyd Star 14, Bogue Chitto 4 

Loyd Star led 5-4 after two innings of action.

The Hornets would catch fire in the fourth and fifth innings as they pounded the Bobcats with a nine-run surge to secure the win in the fifth inning.

Parker Flowers was the winning pitcher for the Hornets with seven strikeouts and one walk. Logan Murray (1K, 3BB) started for Loyd Star.

Rudy Brumfield suffered the setback on the rubber for the Bobcats with two strikeouts and nine walks.

Tucker Watts directed the Hornets at the plate with two doubles. Logan Murray provided a double and a single. James Beard, Levi Redd and Bradyn Brister had two singles each. Lamar Lang, Cole Smith and Cade Hodges hit safely.

The Bobcats were led offensively by Kobe Roberts, Grant Leake, Tucker Lambert, Rudy Brumfield, Conner Douglas, Brandon McKenzie and Trey Crittenden with a single each.
