Wesson beats Franklin County

The Wesson Cobras defeated the Franklin County Bulldogs 6-2 Tuesday night in Region 7-3A action in Meadville.

The Cobras (15-3, 9-0), coached by Seth Lofton, are looking to complete the series sweep to win the division crown Friday night at home when they take on the Bulldogs (13-5, 8-1). Junior varsity action starts at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity contest at 7 p.m.

The Bulldogs secured a 2-0 lead in the first. They were led by DeMartre Collins and Antonio Christmas with RBI singles.

The Cobras quickly rebounded and tied the contest at 2-2 in the top of the second. Derek Freeman led the charge with a single.

Wesson relied on its strong defense to keep Franklin County scoreless through the rest of the contest, while its offense put together a 4-0 run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to extend its lead to 6-2.

Alex Mooney (3K, 5BB) was the winning pitcher for the Cobras in five innings of work. Preston Middleton (4K, 0BB) pitched the final two innings in relief and held Franklin County hitless.

The Bulldogs used a three-man rotation on the mound against Wesson. Jacob McDaniel started for Franklin County and suffered the setback with three strikeouts and four walks. Chris Cantrel (0K, 1BB) and Thomas Slagle (0K, 0BB) also pitched in relief.

Derek Freeman and Bolon Tadlock powered the Cobras with a double and a single each. Slay Acy contributed a double.

Chase Freeman was the offensive leader for the Bulldogs with a triple.
