Hornets clobber Puckett

PUCKETT – The Loyd Star Hornets finished off the Puckett Wolves 9-0 Monday night to collect the sweep in the second round of the Class 2A playoffs.
“Glad to get the win,” said Loyd Star coach Jared Britt. “We managed to keep our focus after having to postpone the game on Saturday. Overall, I am very proud of the guys’ efforts for doing that and bringing the intensity to complete the sweep. Now, we must regroup and focus on our next opponent. We must continue to work hard and bring our best as we prepare for Taylorsville.”
The Hornets (21-7) will advance to third round of the playoffs and face Taylorsville in a best-of-three series, which begins Thursday. Game time and locations have not been set.

Already leading 6-0 with two outs in the fifth inning, the Hornets returned to Puckett to finish up the contest after the game was postponed due to rain.
Loyd Star continued the offensive dominance in the sixth and seventh innings, plating three more runs to complete the shutout.
Levi Redd was the winning pitcher for the Hornets with six strikeouts and three walks. Konner Allen (1K, 0BB) pitched the last two innings in relief.
Tim Vanderford was the losing pitcher for the Wolves with three strikeouts and no walks.
Tucker Watts and Bradyn Brister sparked the Hornets’ offensive onslaught with two doubles each. Cade Hodges, Lamar Lang and Cole Smith fueled the flames with two singles apiece. Konner Allen and Parker Flowers provided a single each.
Payton Tullos and Tim Vanderford directed the Wolves with two singles each. Bailey Rayborn and Blake Beadshane had a single apiece.
