West Jones sweeps Brookhaven

LAUREL – The Brookhaven Panthers suffered a season-ending, 5-4 loss to the West Jones Mustangs Monday in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs.
“Great effort by our kids,” said BHS coach Randy Spring. “Sevante Quinn pitched a great game. Overall, I’m very proud of our kids for competing hard, after such a rough start to begin the season.”
The Mustangs defeated the Panthers Friday at Moyer Field 13-2 to take the first game in the best-of-three series.
The Panthers concluded the season with a 10-15 record.
West Jones 5, Brookhaven 4
Tied 4-4, the Mustangs scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh with a bases-loaded single to right field by Tanner Walters.
West Jones jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a single by Ryan Lowe to score Jacob Bullock.
The Panthers roared back in the top of the second to score two runs and added another run in the fourth to secure a 3-1 lead. But West Jones answered with two runs to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Both teams traded one run each in the fifth inning.
Sevante Quinn suffered the setback on the rubber for Brookhaven with four strikeouts and four walks.
Will McCoy was the winning pitcher for the Mustangs with four strikeouts and four walks in four innings of action. Hayden Bryan (4K, 1BB) pitched the final three innings in relief.
Tyler Mixon and Reese Reynaud were the top hitters at the plate for the Panthers with a single each.
Will McCoy powered the Mustangs with a homerun. Ryan Lowe contributed two singles. Hudson Harris, Evan Bynum, Dustin Dickerson and Gabe Rayner provided a single each.
