Will a new Trump now emerge?

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant has committed to supporting Donald Trump for president. His announcement came after Sen. Ted Cruz announced the suspension of his campaign Tuesday.

Bryant had previously endorsed Cruz.

Most Republicans will likely do as Bryant has done and commit to supporting Trump, even if they question his ability to serve as president. Why? Because the alternative — Hillary Clinton — is unacceptable to them.

Four years of a Trump presidency is preferable to four more years of big-government policies that have weakened the country, they would argue.

But that position assumes that they know what a Trump presidency would look like. And they don’t. Trump likely doesn’t know either. His positions have ping-ponged, his stated policies are sometimes illogical and illegal, and in general, he doesn’t appear to have any real solutions to any real problems.

“Build a wall and have Mexico pay for it” might draw thunderous applause at a campaign rally, but it doesn’t shed much light on how the man would tackle our nation’s immigration problems.

His understanding of world affairs seems thin at best, and he seems to rely on tabloids for his source of news and information. He even goes so far as to repeat the salacious claims found in tabloids, giving them legitimacy among his supporters.

Now it could be that Trump is merely playing the game, and is in actuality an incredibly smart, savvy politician who will now shift his campaign to one that has a chance to defeat Clinton. One could argue that someone who has been as successful in life as he has can’t be as stupid as he often appears. If that’s the case, voters should expect to see a new Trump in the coming days.

And a new Trump might be able to defeat Clinton. But it’s hard to see how the Trump we’ve come to know has any chance of defeating anyone in a general election.
