Q: Is N. Church/Union Street included in Brookhaven’s paving plan? If not, why?

A: The work on N. Church/Union Street is not included in the city-wide paving project awarded to Dickerson & Bowen in January, according to Ryan Holmes, the engineer over the project.

Instead, N. Church Street is part of two plans to replace sewer lines in the city during the end of last year. Residents were concerned when the repaving on that road did not meet expectations. WGK Engineer Mike McKenzie said at the time that Brookhaven officials agreed that the repaving done on that road was not up to their standards.

The issue on N. Church was that the road had to be dug up in order to replace sewer lines. The other sewer project on the south side of town near city hall had smaller patches of road dug up, but McKenzie said those projects were less destructive. They were able to re-line the sewers without completely replacing them.

“It was too far gone,” McKenzie said about the sewer lines under N. Church. “Once they get so far gone, you can’t line them. If there’s not anything there, if it’s broken all to pieces if joints are misaligned — and it was — it has to be dug up and redone.”

McKenzie said in December that he hoped that they’d be able to repave the street before Christmas but was not able to give guarantees.

McKenzie was not available for comment Wednesday.
