Sisters battle for third straight title in doubles

Several athletes from Brookhaven, Enterprise, Loyd Star, Wesson and West Lincoln competed in the MHSAA State Individual Tournament Monday and Tuesday. Class 1A/2A/3A/4A competed at the Oxford Tennis Center and Class 5A/6A competed at the Parham Bridges Tennis Center.

In Class 2A, West Lincoln’s  defending two-time Class 2A girls doubles champions Katy Clark and Kara Clark are seeking their third straight gold medal today. The Clark sisters defeated French Camp 6-2, 6-0 on Monday, Enterprise’s duo of Hanako Mori and Courtney Greer 6-0, 6-0 in the second round and beat St. Joe 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the semifinals Tuesday.

“Katy and Kara Clark are a great duo,” said West Lincoln coach Charlie Jackson. “I am very proud of them. They fought hard to get back to the championship. They showed a lot of grit today and battled through some tough matches.”

In boys’ singles, Sebastian Harrell won the opening round on Monday, beating Parker Baylock of Leland 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 before falling in the second round Tuesday to Chris Wilkinson 6-0, 6-0.

Carlie Smith in girls’ singles, Matthew Allred and Johnathan Mathis in boys’ doubles, Laura Leigh Dunaway and Madison Franklin in girls’ doubles, and Liam Rutland and Abby Grace Stogner in mixed doubles were eliminated in the first round.

Loyd Star  competed at the Oxford Tennis Center.

In boys’ singles, Gavin Thomas was eliminated in the first round on Monday, while Ashlyn Locke (girls’ singles), Conner Crosby and Blayne Brister (boys’ doubles), and Bryson Brister and Madisyn Brister (mixed doubles) were eliminated Tuesday.

Enterprise’s  Wyatt Coleman and Madison Rials (mixed doubles) were defeated in the opening round. Mylaine McCaffery (girls’ singles) and Hanako Mori and Courtney Greer (girls’ doubles) were eliminated in Tuesday matches.

In Class 3A, Wesson’s  Erich Fischer defeated Magee 6-0, 6-0 on Monday and beat Brent Mullins of Franklin County 6-0, 6-0 in boys’ singles Tuesday, before falling to St. Andrews 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinals.

In boys’ doubles, Ray Drane and Reid Crow defeated Morton 6-4, 6-4 on Monday in the opening round, before being eliminate in the second round on Tuesday by St. Andrews 6-2, 6-2.

In mixed doubles, Logan Channell and Maya Granger knocked off New Site 6-2, 6-0 in the opener, before falling in the second round to Kossuth 6-0, 6-2.

In Monday’s matches, Kimberly San lost in the opening round Monday to Forest 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 in girls singles, Devin Wallace and Skyler Rasberry fell to Mooreville in boys’ double 6-0, 6-1. In girls’ doubles, Mary Beth Munn and Amber Brinson lost to Alcorn Central 6-1, 6-2. Morgan Wesley and Shaylin Green fell to South Pontotoc 6-0, 6-0.

In Class 5A, Brookhaven’s  Sarah Grace Evans had to withdraw from girls’ singles competition due to a knee injury. Daniel Panzica (BHS) defeated Ryan Adams (South Jones) in boys’ singles 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 at the Parham Bridges Tennis Center.

In girls’ doubles, Alice Anne Walker and Lea Allen defeated Raeliegh Bradley and Taylor Zachary of West Jones 7-6, 3-6, 6-4.

In boys’ doubles, Will Moak and Daniel Clark were defeated by Clarksdale 6-4, 6-3.

Cooper Patterson and Michael Haynes Hutson were defeated by Blake Beech and Reid Cudd of Stone County 6-0, 6-0.

In mixed doubles, Maggie Massengill and Dalton Fortado were defeated by Isaac Hoffman and Brooke Cran of Wayne County 6-3, 6-1.

In Tuesday’s matches, Alice Anne Walker and Lea Allen were defeated by Laurel Buckely and Victoria Alexander of Stone County 6-2, 6-3 in girls’ doubles.

In boys’ singles, Daniel Panzica defeated Tripp Case of Germantown 6-2, 6-4, but was defeated in the semifinals by Darius Kent 6-1, 6-1.
