LCSD to pay detention center

Following a court decision, the Lincoln County School District is now required to pay a portion of the approved cost for the Adams County Juvenile Detention Center, despite the fact that the district does not have any children in the detention center.

“All 11 districts that border that detention center have to share a cost,” business manager Cheryl Shelby told the school board Monday. “We’re required to pay it. I checked with the Department of Education to see if we really have a choice because we didn’t have any children over there. They said that was totally irrelevant.”

The district’s bill for this year was $1,409.09. The money will go toward housing juveniles at the facility. Even though the district does not currently have any children in the system, they are still served by the detention center, according to Superintendent Mickey Myers.

“Teachers from the Adams County School District go and provide educational services toward students that are assigned there by the court,” Myers said.

State of the budget

In a previous meeting, Shelby reported to the school board that the renovation budget was low on funds. Shelby took the opportunity to clarify that the district was not in need of additional money.

“It kind of made it seem like we didn’t have any money, and that’s not the case,” Shelby said. “We always replenish the repair and renovation fund every year.”

Shelby said the board had plenty of options on the source of funds to be transferred to the renovation budget.

“Because you are in such good financial state, you can take it from several different places,” Shelby said.
