Tax hike for residents in Lincoln County School District not likely

Residents likely won’t see an increase in taxes to fund attendance centers in Loyd Star, Enterprise, West Lincoln and Bogue Chitto, Lincoln County School District Superintendent Mickey Myers said.

“We’re not looking for any millage increase,” he said. “There will be no tax increase for the residents of the Lincoln County School District.”

A public hearing is set for Monday at 5 p.m. at the central office on 233 E. Monticello St. to discuss the proposed ad valorem tax effort.

For the next fiscal year, the Lincoln County School District has a projected budget revenue of $26,079,362, up $423,711 from the current budget. It’s proposed that 16 percent will be financed through an ad valorem tax levy — identical to the percentage covered by ad valorem taxes in the 2015-16 year. This represents $4,208,440, up $3,169 from the current budget.

Myers said $3,000 “in a budget that large is inconsequential.”

Myers said the district this upcoming school year isn’t planning any major building projects, which can come with a hefty price tag. Dungan Engineering is completing a five-year and 10-year plan based on the district’s needs assessment, and Myers already anticipates a building project next year to address additional classroom space that is needed now.

The district is approaching an enrollment of 3,200 students, he said.

According to Mississippi Code, a referendum must be called if the millage rate required for the proposed budget exceeds 55 mills and also exceeds the millage rate currently in use. Ad valorem taxes in the county are payed on homes, automobile tags, business fixtures, equipment and rental real property.

The millage rate is set by the county Board of Supervisors after the school district makes a request in dollars. The bulk of the districts income comes from state funding.

Residents may attend the meeting and will be given the opportunity to speak for a reasonable amount of time and present evidence before the issue comes up for a vote.
