Brookhaven School District proposing bigger budget

The Brookhaven School District will hold a public hearing Tuesday on its proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2017, which shows an increase of just over $2 million.
A proposed ad valorem tax effort will be considered, said Linda Reeves, the district’s finance director.
The hearing will be held at 6 p.m. in the conference room at the Central Office Building at 326 E. Court St.
The district is currently operating with a projected total budget revenue of $29,124,842. Of that, $9,576,686, or 32 percent, of the revenue is obtained through ad valorem taxes.
Ad valorem taxes are those taxes paid on homes, automobile tags, business fixtures and equipment, and rental real property.
For the next fiscal year, the proposed budget has a total projected revenue of $31,612,341. Of that, 32 percent, which this time would amount to $10,387,449, is proposed to be financed through an ad valorem tax levy.
That’s a budget increase of $2,487,499.
The board’s request could cause a slight tax increase for residents and business owners in the district, Reeves said. That would be determined by the district’s levy authority, which is the Brookhaven Board of Aldermen.
She said the school board will keep their request to a minimum, and would ask for no more than a state-allowed 4 percent increase, which would be about $333,000.
She said the school board also may not ask for the full 4 percent allowed. The final budget proposal and request will be presented at the hearing.
The public will be allowed to address the board at the hearing.
The school board will not adopt the budget until June 28, she said.
Brookhaven School District includes five schools: Mamie Martin Elementary, Brookhaven Elementary, Lipsey School, Alexander Jr. High, Brookhaven High, Brookhaven Technical School and Fannie Mullins School.
