Brookhaven police are investigating a shooting Thursday night that left one man critically injured.

Samuel Leggett, 37, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, said Brookhaven police detective Penelope Banks.

Leggett is accused of shooting Steven Barnes with a handgun at Lincoln Apartments on Old Wesson Road about 7:47 p.m. Officers who responded found Barnes lying on the floor of Leggett’s apartment, Banks said.

Barnes, 41, of Brookhaven, was airlifted to a Jackson hospital where he remains in critical condition, she said.

Leggett was arrested at the scene.

Police have not found the weapon. They are still trying to determine what led up to the shooting, Banks said.
