Time still needed for the Wesson paving project

Wesson will soon be bidding for a $250,000 paving project, according to mayor Alton Shaw.

The money comes from a general obligation bond awarded to Trustmark National Bank last year. Some of the money was used to pay off a previous obligation, and the excess is being used to do much needed repairs on Wesson roads, according to Shaw.

The Mayor originally estimated up to 50 percent of the town’s non-state roads could be covered, but Shaw has since become more cautious.

“We’re doing a price per unit,” Shaw said. “Once we get those, we can sit down and look at the money and figure out how much we can do.

“To say we’re going to go out and do three miles, I don’t know. It really depends on how the bids come out and how everything is divided up.”

Shaw said the project will use a combination of slurry seal and regular asphalt, and because the amount of work done will depend on bids, Shaw said there is no concrete plan yet in place determining which roads will get paved.

“Everybody wants to know if theirs is getting done, and the answer right now is that I don’t know at this time,” he said. “We’ll be looking at the conditions and going from worst to best.”

Because state law requires at least 30 days of advertising for a bid, Shaw said it is likely that bids will not be open until September.

“We’re still waiting on the engineer to finish out the documents,” he said. “Once that’s done, we’ll put it in the paper.”
