In a closing act to a long Girl Scout career, scouts Kyla Wilcher and Erica Nelson donated several books to the Lincoln County Public Library Wednesday.

Troop leader Ursula Nelson said the girls both graduated with honors from Brookhaven High School in May and are moving on to other things, but the girls wanted to provide one more service to the community as Girl Scouts before they retired from the group.

“They try to promote community service,” Nelson said. “That was their community service, being their last year, to donate books to the library.”

Nelson said service is big part of being in the Girl Scouts. This year, the 16 Girl Scout troops of Lincoln County walked for breast cancer awareness, and they are involved in other volunteer activities around town.

“Some troops visit the hospital,” Nelson said. “I’ve seen some go to the nursing home and volunteer.”

Nelson has been running Girl Scout Troop 5923 since Erica was a young girl, but by now most of the members have graduated.

“I’ve had my troop for 13 years. The majority of them have graduated out, and we were down to four members this year,” Nelson said.

At the end of the school year Nelson had just one girl left, but she’s planning to register again this year.

“I’m going to also register,” Nelson said. “I’m just going to help out with the other troops, and we’re going to volunteer with those troops.”

Nelson said she’ll miss leading a Girl Scout troop and the girls who have been a part of 5923.

“I miss all of them,” she said. “I watched them grow from 6-year-old girls to young adults. I will miss having the girls around.”
