School bus purchases, candy sales approved at Brookhaven School District board meeting

It took just seven minutes Tuesday night for the Brookhaven School Board to cover a more than three-page agenda, most of which included consent items that required no discussion.

That’s normal for the late July meeting that comes just before school starts, Brookhaven Superintendent Ray Carlock said.

“We’re starting off the year and hopefully we’re going to have a great year,” he said.

Among the items approved without discussion Tuesday was the request to purchase three school buses for a total amount of $258,944.

The request had previously been discussed during the board’s budget hearing and all of the board members supported it.

Carlock said after the meeting, the board would like to add three buses each year.

“But as things get tighter, I don’t know,” he said.

The agenda included six schools and organizations requesting permission for their fundraising plans.

Among those  were requests from Mamie Martin Elementary for students to sell wrapping paper and Brookhaven Elementary to host a silent auction, a Walk-a-Thon and a spring carnival and to sell candy canes. BES also requested permission to collect donations of pet food and supplies for Brookhaven Animal Rescue League, donations for Operation Christmas Child and change for Heifer International.

Brookhaven High School’s baseball team fundraiser requests include selling advertising signage for the field, smoked meat and apparel. They also plan to host a one-day Little Panther baseball camp for K-sixth grades.

Lipsey School requested to sell T-shirts and chocolate, and conduct a 5K in conjunction with Brookhaven Elementary. They also requested to sell shamrocks to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, collect adhesive bandages for Blair. E. Batson Hospital for Children and conduct a canned food drive.

The Alexander Jr. High athletics department asked to sell T-shirts, team programs, spirit items and chocolate and candy.

BHS Band requested to sell spirit cards and trash bags and to sell concessions at football games. They also asked to conduct a food drive.

Carlock expects more fundraising requests to come before the board in future meetings. The volume of requests seems to be the same as in previous years, he said, and are usually the same requests made by the organizations and schools each year.

He said he’d like to be able to provide the money the schools and organizations need so they wouldn’t have to raise their own funds for projects.

“We’d love to put more in their budgets,” he said. “We do all we can.”

Finance Director Linda Reeves will present the June financial reports at the Aug. 23 meeting. The reports were not available at the July meeting because of computer hardware and software upgrades in her office.

The board also went into executive session for about an hour to allow a parent to speak to the board concerning a child.

No action was taken when the meeting returned to open session.

Other business approved included:

•A request for the BHS Band to travel to Disney World in Orlando, Florida in 2017.

•Disposal of out-of-date textbooks at Lipsey School, BHS and Brookhaven Technical Center.

•A donation from the Gridiron Club to BHS Athletics for $5,000 for football supplies.
