Collections continue for Louisiana

With an estimated 40,000 homes damaged by deadly flooding, Louisiana residents need help and Lincoln County is delivering.

Literally.

School groups, churches, businesses and organizations this week are hauling to Louisiana thousands of pounds of bottled water, canned goods and the basic necessities needed by those who have lost most of their possessions in the flood.

The flooding has left at least 12 people dead. More than 30,000 people have been rescued, and at least 70,000 have registered for federal disaster assistance, according to the latest FEMA figures.

Several groups are collecting donations for distribution in Louisiana.

•Copiah-Lincoln Community College and the Eta Omega Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa are accepting donations at Co-Lin’s 18-Wheeler at the KDMC Kick-Off Classic today and Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. or at the Counseling Center in the Henley Building through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

• St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church Knights of Columbus is accepting donations at the church, located at Cherokee and Second streets, from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Friday. Pickups are available by calling the church office at 601-833-1799, Emile Gennaro at 601-757-7580 or Aaron Achord at 691-754-1806.

The Knights are taking a load of supplies Friday morning, but will continue to accept donations for additional trips, Gennaro said.

• Farm Bureau in Brookhaven, 303 West Cherokee St., is accepting donations until 5 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

• First Heritage Credit, 937 Brookway Blvd. Suite H, will take donations until 5:30 p.m. today and 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday.

• Calvary Baptist Church Bogue Chitto’s youth group is collecting items for those affected by the flood. Supplies can be dropped off at the church on Calvary Road in Bogue Chitto during church hours through Friday or during services from 10 a.m. to noon Sunday. Donations will also be accepted during business hours at the Brookhaven or McComb locations of Thrift Home Care.

• Donations can be dropped off at the Brookhaven Moose Family Center, 1229 Calcote Loop NE. They don’t have a cutoff planned at this point. For information about the Moose Lodge recovery efforts, call 601-672-3874.

• Members of Clear Branch Baptist Church will be making their second trip to Louisiana Friday to remove sheetrock from flooded homes and a church.

• Macedonia Baptist Church took items to the Baton Rouge area Thursday.

• Jessica Kyzar, a dispatcher at Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, took items to Louisiana Wednesday.

• The Lincoln County Baptist Association has been designated as a collection point for supplies to send to Louisiana. Donations can be dropped off during office hours, Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. The office is located at 640 Halbert Heights Road.

Monetary donations can be given to First Baptist Church for Louisiana Disaster Relief. It will be sent to the Mississippi Baptist Association for distribution where it is most needed.

At MEMA’s request, teams of Mississippi Baptists will be helping within the state this weekend with clean-up efforts in Crosby in Wilkinson County, which had about 75 homes flooded.
