The Brookhaven Police Department looking for a few good men. And women. Four all together, to be exact.

BPD is actively recruiting for entry-level police officers.

“If you are interested in the law enforcement field and feel up to the challenge or know of someone interested who possesses these qualities, you are encouraged to apply,” said Cpl. Jonathon Alford, a detective with the department.

Generally, applicants must be at least 21, have a valid drivers license and a have a high school diploma.

BPD has a few other qualifications for applicants as well, he said.

Potential candidates must be able to pass the 12-week basic training academy, pass background checks and “have good moral fortitude.”

The latter is because police officers in Mississippi don’t do the job for the money. According to information from Alford, the average salary of a Mississippi law enforcement officer is among the lowest in the nation, and BPD’s salaries are in line with that state average. An officer in Brookhaven can make between $27,500 to $30,400.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average nationwide salary is roughly double those numbers.

Police Chief Bobby Bell said the applicants for the job need to be of a special caliber.

“I would like to hire as soon as possible, but we are looking for those who want to give to this community, and have dedicated themselves to the people of Brookhaven and Lincoln County,” he said.

BPD will host a recruitment seminar at the BPD headquarters at 440 US 51 for those who are interested in finding out about the application process and training. It will be held March 4, from 10 to 11 a.m.

“It’s a time to ask any questions and meet guys from the police department,” Alford said.

Applications are also taken during daytime office hours at the department.

Those who cannot attend the seminar can contact Alford at 601-833-2424 with questions.
