“Vanessa Williams” and “Beverly Johnson” will take the stage Saturday at the Brookhaven/Lincoln County NAACP black history program. Of course, the actresses will look a lot younger in person — 2 and 4 years old to be exact.

Those attending will also likely see Katherine Johnson, the American physicist and mathematician who was the inspiration for the movie, “Hidden Figures,” the late Nelson Mandela, Michael Jordan, Michelle Obama, Tina Turner, Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman.

The program will begin at 6 p.m. at Living Word Faith Ministry Church at 791 Ozark Lane. Refreshments will be served following the presentation.

Members of the Brookhaven/Lincoln County NAACP’s Youth Council will portray famous African American celebrities, athletes and historical figures, said branch president Bernetta M. Character.

“They pick the characters out themselves of who they want to portray,” she said. “They’re controlling the program.”

This is the fifth year for the program, which is always held at the end of Black History Month.

The youth involved range in age from 2 to 16 years old. The older kids researched the person they each chose and will give a presentation about who they’re representing and how that person made their mark in black history. The younger kids will have a little help, she said.

The NAACP Youth Council meets each first Saturday at 10 a.m. at Good Samaritan Hall, 423 East Chippewa St.

The youth routinely take trips to historic sites and attend the state conference. Dues are $15 for youth 18 to 20 years old and $10 for 17 and under.
