Loyd Star blanks Prentiss 17-0

The Loyd Star Hornets handled business as usual Tuesday night as they got great hitting and pitching performances in their 17-0 win over district opponent Prentiss.

The win keeps the Hornets undefeated at 11-0 and a perfect 4-0 record in district play. The loss drops Prentiss to 0-8 overall and 0-4 in district play.

“The guys did a good job with their approaches at the plate,” Loyd Star head coach Jared Britt said. “It’s good to get another district win, but we must continue working hard to get better each day.”

That approach at the plate gave Loyd Star 16 total hits, which translated into 17 runs. That tied for the most runs scored in a game this season.  Loyd Star scored four runs in the first inning, six runs in the second inning and seven runs in the third inning to get the win.

Senior Cole Smith led Loyd Star at the plate, going 2-for-2 with four RBIs for the game, including a three-run homer. Junior Tucker Watts followed up going 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs, including a two-run homer. Seniors Konner Allen, Bradyn Brister and sophomore Dane Smith each had two RBIs to round out the scoring leaders for the Hornets.

Junior pitcher Cade Hodges got the win on the mound as the starter for Loyd Star. Hodges went two innings, giving no runs and no hits while striking out six batters in the process. Hodges moves to 4-0 on the year as a starter. Sophomore Dylan Case came in the game in relief and pitched one inning, giving up no runs, no hits and striking out two.

Next up for the Hornets is a double-header tonight at home versus Prentiss with another opportunity to improve on their undefeated district record. First game is set to start at 4:30 p.m.  with the second game of the double-header set to start at 6:30 p.m.
