COLUMBUS (AP) — A man was shot to death after fleeing during a traffic stop and leading officers on a high-speed chase that ended in gunfire in eastern Mississippi.
State Department of Public Safety spokesman Warren Strain says a Lowndes County deputy sheriff was shot in the leg, but the wound is not considered life-threatening.

Just after 10:00 a.m. a Webster County Sheriff’s deputy stopped a white Hyundai SUV near Mathiston after the department received a 911 call on suspicion of DUI. Mississippi Highway Patrol officers joined sheriff’s department officers from three counties in a multi-county, high-speed pursuit. Stop sticks were deployed inside the City of Columbus but the driver evaded the attempt to stop the vehicle. More stop sticks were deployed near the intersection of Highways 50 and 82 and the vehicle was stopped. The suspect in the vehicle exited the SUV brandishing two hand guns.
It was unclear who killed the fleeing man, 45-year-old Pryor Spencer Bailey IV of Starkville. An autopsy will be done by the State Medical Examiner’s Office, and evidence collected at the scene will be submitted to the State Crime Laboratory. .
The name of the wounded deputy was not immediately released.

Agents of the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, members of its Crime Scene Unit and members of the Mississippi Highway Patrol’s Criminal Reconstruction Unit are investigating.
Bailey was white.
