The storm that brought down trees and power lines caused plenty of headaches and heartaches for Brookhaven residents.

Several homes were damaged and at least three were deemed destroyed by emergency officials.

Thankfully, no one was seriously injured. But it was a scary night for several families.

Once the sun was up Thursday, it was obvious just how bad the damage was. Winds as high as 90 mph downed trees that blocked roads and damaged houses. Thousands were without power much of Thursday and into Thursday night.

We saw plenty of destruction. But we also saw neighbors helping neighbors. We saw people pitching in to clear tree limbs from driveways and roads. We saw the kindness that this community is known for.

One woman stopped by the newspaper office to pick up extra rolls of newsprint to help a family pack up dishes and other breakables. The family’s home was destroyed and neighbors were helping clean up and sort through the broken rafters and sheetrock.

It’s often in the worst of times that communities show what they are made of. And we’re thankful that Brookhaven and Lincoln County are made of such caring, kind people.
