Lady Cats hold off Lady Panthers 4-3

The Bogue Chitto Lady Cats jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the top of the second inning and held on late. The Ole brook Lady Panthers rallied late, but couldn’t complete the comeback with Bogue Chitto winning by a score of 4-3.

The win completes the season sweep for Bogue Chitto, winning both games against Brookhaven and moves the Lady Cats to 13-7 overall. The loss continues the rough stretch for Brookhaven and drops them to 15-9 overall.

“We did a good job finishing the game,” Bogue Chitto head coach Scott Leggett said. “Brookhaven made a run at the end, but we held on. We did miss some opportunities to score more runs.”

Bogue Chitto got off to a quick start in the top of the first by putting up two runs. Freshman Codi Leggett got things started with an RBI double to left field to make it 1-0 Lady Cats. Baileigh Jackson followed with a sacrifice fly, which scored senior Terrah Nelson from third to give Bogue Chitto the 2-0 lead.

In the top of the second, senior Cherie Savoie forced a walk with the bases loaded to bring in another run and made it 3-0 Bogue Chitto. With the bases loaded and no outs, Brookhaven junior pitcher Jadeyn Fuller forced a fielder’s choice, a strikeout and a fly out to escape the jam and kept the game within reach.

The Lady Panthers responded in the bottom of the second with an RBI single from junior Madison Thompson to put Ole Brook on the board at 3-1.

Bogue Chitto added an insurance run in the top of the fourth with an RBI sacrifice fly from Nelson, which scored Savoie from third to make it 4-1.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the sixth inning. Senior Macy Ziskin came up big for the Lady Panthers and hit a two-RBI single to center field to score seniors Tia Bussey and Cheyenne Motley to make it 4-3 Bogue Chitto.

The Lady Panthers went down in order in the bottom of the seventh as Bogue Chitto took home the victory.

Leggett got the start and took the win on the mound for Bogue Chitto. She went the complete seven innings and gave up three earned runs on four hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Leggett also went 1-for-4 at the plate with the RBI double in the first inning. Jackson, Nelson and Savoie each had one RBI to lead the scoring attack for the Lady Cats.

Fuller went the complete seven innings for Brookhaven, giving up four earned runs on four hits, four walks and one strikeout.

Ziskin led the Lady Panthers going 1-for-3 at the plate with the big RBI double in the bottom of the sixth. Thompson followed up going 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI on the night.

Bogue Chitto is next in action tonight when they host Lawrence County. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.

Brookhaven will look to end their five-game losing streak tonight as they travel to face Salem. First pitch is set for 6:15 p.m.

The Brookhaven and Bogue Chitto junior varsity teams played before the varsity game Tuesday night and the game ended in a 4-4 tie. Meg Foster led the Lady Panthers with a home run.
