Two Enterprise students will be spending part of their summer with dead people.

Senior Wyatt Coleman and junior Cameron Givens were two out of only 15 students across the state to be selected to attend a one-week clinical anatomy workshop at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson in July.

This is the second year of the program and the first time Lincoln County students were selected to attend.

One of the goals of UMMC is to increase the number of healthcare professionals in the state. Students will be exposed to various healthcare fields and professions in the workshop. “We’re going to be working with doctors, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, surgeons and many other people that are in the healthcare industry,” Givens said.

Part of their learning will come by hands-on instruction with cadavers.

Under direct supervision by workshop instructors, Coleman and Givens will be able to explore the human body from the inside by seeing structures that are not seen without medical imaging. “Each day on the cadaver we will be learning about the different body systems in the human body, “ Coleman said.

Students will get hands-on experiences designed to foster interest in the human body and in healthcare professions.

Teachers who work closely with UMMC through the Rural Biomedical Initiative chose the 15 students for participation in the program.

Kathy McKone, a former RBI teacher at Enterprise, nominated both Coleman and Givens.

The Enterprise students will hear a guest speaker each day. Both students are eager for the opportunity, as both plan on a career in the medical field. Coleman wants to be a nurse practitioner, while Givens plans to be a nurse anesthetist.
