Behind another no-hitter from freshman pitcher Codi Leggett, the Bogue Chitto Lady Cats defeated Ethel Saturday afternoon by a score of 2-0 to win the South State title and advance to the 1A state title series.

After the game, the team embraced each other at the  mound in celebration of yet another South State title. Head coach Scott Leggett ran over to his team and presented Leggett with the game ball for her second consecutive no-hitter.

“That has to be history or something right there,” Leggett said of the moment. “Doing what she just did is incredibly tough. She’s a great competitor.”

Leggett has been battling for this team all season and fighting through a knee injury. After the game, she had ice wrapped up around her pitching shoulder and knee, but that won’t slow her down for the title series.

“Codi has been working hard ever since she was a small girl,” Leggett said. “She locates her pitches well. She can mix up the speed of her pitches well. She fights through it all.”

It was a pitching duel the entire game between both schools, but the Bogue Chitto Lady Cats broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning to take the lead. With runners on second and third with two outs, junior Reagan Kirkland came up big with a two-run RBI single to give the Lady Cats the 2-0.

That was all Leggett and the Bogue Chitto defense needed as they held on to the slim lead and won the South State championship.

“The girls have done a fantastic job this whole season and have represented Bogue Chitto well,” Leggett said. “They’re continuing the tradition. This is a great group of girls here and they deserve to go back. This is a pretty good run they’re making.”

The win Saturday afternoon makes it 11 in a row for Bogue Chitto and are peaking at the right time.

After the final pitch, the team ran to Leggett at the pitchers mound and jumped into each other’s arms in celebration of a consecutive trip to the 1A state title series. This time, they’ll be looking for a different result.

“We know the team we’ll be facing will be an extremely tough opponent for us and the girls know that,” Leggett said. “We just have to keep doing what we are doing. It’s nothing out of the ordinary. Just have to stay routine with our fundamentals and squaring up on the ball. Don’t make it any more than what it really is.”

Bogue Chitto will face Hamilton in the 1A state title series Wednesday at Freedom Ridge in Ridgeland. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
