The cost of tuition and required fees has increased at Copiah-Lincoln Community College and Southwest Mississippi Community College.

These costs will increase at all of Mississippi’s 15 public community colleges this fall, with the average cost for two semesters rising to $3,104, a 13 percent increase. This is the first time historically that the average price has exceeded $3,000, as schools seek to offset state budget cuts.

Last year’s annual cost was $2,748, on average. Jones County Junior College will have the highest tuition, with two semesters of full-time classes costing $3,480.

Increases come as state funding to community colleges falls 10 percent beginning July 1, compared to the original budget at this year’s beginning. That remains below the level required by state law.

Tuition continues to rise faster than inflation and incomes.
