Verdict clear on city’s election process

The boxes were opened and the verdict was clear — municipal elections in Brookhaven were well run.

Three candidates and a representative from the state Democratic Party looked though ballot boxes and other information from the June 6 races and found nothing unusual.

One of the races — for Ward 6 alderman — was especially close so an inspection of the ballot boxes wasn’t unusual.

“They were both very well-run elections. I just told Dustin that I am a connoisseur of the work. The work was done correctly but the voters just didn’t turn out,” Jacqueline Amos, a representative of the Mississippi Democratic Party, said about the two ward races she inspected with candidates.

She was complimentary of Circuit Clerk Dustin Bairfield and Deputy City Clerk Samantha Melancon. Both oversaw the elections and both deserve a “thank you” for a job well done.

An orderly and transparent election process helps ensure fairness. We are thankful the June 6 races were just that.
