A tropical storm is expected to bring heavy rain to Southwest Mississippi this week, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a flash flood watch.

The watch is in effect through Thursday evening.

“A tropical airmass associated with a developing low pressure system in the Gulf of Mexico will continue surging into the region over the next few days. This will result in several rounds of rainfall, some of which will be heavy,” NWS said.

Rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches with locally higher amounts in a short period of time may lead to flash flooding. Several rounds of this type of rain will occur Wednesday through Thursday night, NWS said.

The flooding of roads, low lying areas, and areas with poor drainage will be possible. If you encounter flooded roadways, remember to turn around, don’t drown.

A flash flood watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding
