Brookhaven Academy alum Corey Dickerson is officially an All-Star.

Major League Baseball announced the All-Star rosters Sunday night and Dickerson grabbed the designated hitter spot for the American League.  The MLB All-Star Game will be July 11 in Miami.

The Tampa Bay Rays’ outfielder/DH, who is from Summit and attended BA, has 104 hits, 17 home runs, 40 RBIs and is averaging .321 on the season. The current season has been Dickerson’s best by far in the Majors.

“To me emotionally, for me and my family, to win the fan vote was even more special, even though it would have been special to just make the team in general,” Dickerson told The Tampa Bay Times. “But winning the fan vote showed how much the fans care, and how much it is a fan’s game. It feels like that hard work is appreciated, and I’m very thankful.”

Dickerson, 28, was a multi-sport athlete at BA. He played basketball and football in addition to baseball. He was The Daily Leader’s Most Valuable Offensive Player on the 2008 All-Lincoln team.

After a stellar career at BA, he played at Meridian Community College and was an NJCAA All-American in 2009. He signed with the Colorado Rockies in 2010. He was drafted in the eighth round of the MLB draft that year.

The Rockies called up Dickerson in 2013. His promotion came on the heels of a great season in Triple-A, where he led all of minor league baseball in batting average (.386), triples (13), and doubles (19) in 65 games played.

“He’s the natural” Dickerson’s former high school coach, Stephen Cooksey, said when he was called up. “He can flat-out hit and play the game of baseball.”
