A new city clerk will be appointed Wednesday at the first meeting of the Brookhaven Board of Aldermen since the mayor and board took their oaths of office last week.

Several aldermen will be new to their seats at the table.

Ward 2 Alderman Shannon Moore, Ward 4 Alderman Jason Snider and Ward 6 Alderwoman Shelley Harrigill will be voting on city issues for the first time.

They’ll be joined by incumbents, Ward 3 Alderwoman Mary Wilson, Ward 5 Alderman Fletcher Grice and Alderwoman-at-Large Karen Sullivan.

Ward 1 Alderman Dorsey Cameron defeated a challenger for the position, but had previously served on the board.

Mayor Joe Cox will begin his second four-year term in the city’s top job.

“I am excited to begin working with the new board and continuing the work that is moving Brookhaven forward,” he said. “The board definitely will miss the experience of those board members who are not returning and there are big shoes to fill. I am confident the newly-elected board is up to the task.”

Former City Clerk Mike Jinks retired Friday. He recommended his deputy clerk, Samantha Melancon, for his position. Jinks was elected in 2004, but in recent years, the legislature passed a law that turned that elected position into one that is appointed by the board.The board will vote for Jinks’ successor at the meeting, Cox said.The meeting will also include the likely reappointments of Judge Brad Boerner, city prosecutor Joseph Durr and court appointed attorney Jason Barrett. Department heads will also likely be reappointed, he said.

The board meets at 6:30 p.m. in the city’s board room in the Lincoln County Government Complex on First Street. The meeting was moved to Wednesday because Tuesday was a federal holiday.
