The Enterprise Lady Jackets were mean girls Tuesday night, using a bullying defense to shut down the visiting Wildcats from Salem and run away to a 47-9 victory.
The ladies in white gathered up 19 defensive rebounds and took 16 steals away from the Lady Wildcats, who looked discombobulated for four quarters as their offense fell apart on the perimeter. Enterprise sealed up the inside and forced Salem to waste its offensive possessions passing around the edge, moving in close for opportunistic pressures and jump balls whenever the Wildcats tried to push toward the basket.
“We were a little more aggressive than we normally are and Salem had trouble handling the ball,” said Enterprise coach Shane Adams. “We turned some early turnovers into baskets and our girls did a good job of protecting the lead.”
The Lady Jackets weren’t always sharp on offense. They hit 21 of 61 total field goals, missing all seven of their 3-point shots, for a 34 percent shooting percentage. Ten different players scored, with junior Brittney Barnett leading all scorers with nine points and senior Carlee Nations close behind with eight points.
But with their defense smothering the life out of Salem, they didn’t need to score a lot. Adams constantly rotated fresh girls into the lineup and Enterprise was able to play fast throughout the game. The team totaled 30 rebounds and only nine turnovers, compiling an efficiency rating of 50.
“We pressed, and our press is awesome,” said senior Karlee Burgess. “We played hard defense, and we played with intensity.”
Burgess grabbed three rebounds, took away one steal and scored six points on the night. Nations led the team in steals with four, while Barnett, senior Jana Nations and freshman Shauna Hewitt grabbed two each.
Senior Eden Ward led the team in defensive rebounds with five, and managed to grab a steal and score a basket as well.
“We played good defense, and we came out with a good attitude,” she said.
Enterprise’s attitude got better and better as the gap on the scoreboard widened.
Late in the game, sophomore Marlee Gunnell carefully gathered up a Salem turnover in the corner and laughed out loud as players slid across the floor, smiling all the way to a wide-open jump shot.
At that point of the game, even the Salem girls were giggling a little.
The victory improves the Lady Jackets to 3-0 this season. They’ll face St. Andrews at home tonight.
