The Brookhaven Academy Cougars and Lady Cougars marched into district play on the right foot Tuesday evening, traveling to Bay Springs to defeat the Saints and Lady Saints in a sweep.

The BA boys coasted to a 67-42 win, while the BA girls crushed their opponents 59-31.

In varsity boys’ action, BA used an 18-9 first quarter advantage to put some space between them and a young Sylva Bay squad and didn’t look back from there. BA Junior Dawson Flowers paced the Cougar scoring attack with a game-high 20 points. Ethan Nations added 14 points, while Tate Felder contributed 13 points to the scoring ledger.

In girls’ action, the Lady Cougars started slow but kicked it into high gear midway through the first quarter, posting a 15-6 lead to wrap up the initial frame. Behind tough defensive pressure, the ladies from BA were able to stretch their lead to 23 points going into the locker room at halftime and held the Lady Saints at bay for the rest of the contest.

Jana Case led BA and all scorers with 21 points. Cameron Watson tossed in 10 points and Cassie White had nine points in support.

In junior high boys’ action, the Cougars fought off a scrappy Saints squad and escaped with a 26-16 victory. Gavin Brogden pitched in seven points and Trey Fortenberry followed with five to pace BA.

In junior high girls’ action, the Lady Cougars got little resistance from the Lady Saints on their way to a 39-20 win. Madison Moak led BA with 12 points. Madi Smith and Makayla Martin each had five points as the Lady Cougars put ten players in the scoring column.

BA is back in action tonight as they travel to Newton Academy for four district games. Jr high girls’ tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. The Cougars will be back at home on Saturday as Centreville Academy visits John R. Gray Gymnasium.
